Chirpy
2, an animated video by John Goras, will be having its world
premiere at Triton Gallery, LLC, located in Nicosia, Cyprus. The
exhibition runs from June 1 through July 6, 2007.
During the exhibition, the video will be shown continuously as a
large projection in the main gallery, while the first installment
of Chirpy will be shown in the project space. Chirpy,
described by the director as his statement on modern pornography,
is the classically animated tale of a small bird's irrepressible
love for a large horse, and vice versa. This
work shamelessly plays with our notions of innocence and romance,
while catering to the simultaneously abstract and vicarious pleasures
audiences take in seeing cartoon figures subvert basic laws of physics.
As Libby Rosof noted in artblog, "The two characters
and the drawing were sweet and charming, but never has romantic
love and its conventions taken such a beating." In
Chirpy 2, Chirpy and Stud break up, only to be reunited
under strange circumstances. Without giving away too much of the
plot (spoiler warning), it turns out Stud’s semen has a magical
power similar to the fountain of youth. Other characters making
appearances in Chirpy 2 include an elderly bar hag, a pimp,
a prostitute, and a homeless man.

The bright candy colors and stylized drawing style make Chirpy
2 a feast for the eyes, while its XXX-rated slapstick humor
creates a painfully funny treat. The movie is further enhanced by
an utterly captivating soundtrack and unique voice work.
Goras' Chirpy animations are the H.R. Pufnstuf
for a generation that not only inhaled, but were subjected to the
advent of cable television. Weaned on horror films, animation, trash
cinema and comic books, Goras unleashes his adolescent fantasies
on a jaded public that still manages to be surprised at the dysfunctional
quality of his vision. Like the work of Daniel Johnston and Henry
Darger, there is something disturbing taking place in
his world.
